The Situation
In February 2026, Somalia declared a national drought emergency, following two consecutive failed rainy seasons. Almost 5 million people are impacted by this drought, as well as nearly 2 million livestock, leading to mass displacement and a serious risk of famine. Without immediate relief, conditions look to worsen, with the Somali Disaster Agency stating that the crisis has reached a “dangerous state”.
Funding Withdrawal
In January of this year, the US withdrew all assistance to Somalia, leading to a major funding shortfall for organisations working in the region such as the World Food Programme (WFP), the largest humanitarian agency in Somalia. The WFP have reduced the number of people receiving aid to just over 600,000, a steep drop off from 2.2 million people a year ago. Relying on international agencies and government funding is not enough.
